What is Blaspheming the Holy Spirit?
I've heard many different theories as to what blaspheming the Holy Ghost is.
But I'm not interested in man's theories.
I want to know what Jesus was talking about, when He gave the warning not to do it.
After all, that's all that really matters, anyhow!
So, here's the Scriptures:
Matthew 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them...
31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come...
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Mark 3:22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.
23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them...
28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.
And here's the dictionary definition of "Blasphemy":
noun:
-the act or offense of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk.
This is a sin of speech. It's not a thought. It's something that comes out of the mouth.
It's speaking evil of God, or using His Name in a common, or unholy way.
Blasphemy is also speaking evil of holy things, such as speaking evil of the church, or the Bible.
Now, look back at those two passages in Matthew and Mark.
The Pharisees had just said something, and Jesus was answering their evil talk.
They had just said that the power by which Jesus did miracles, was demonic.
The power by which Jesus did miracles was the Spirit of God.
So, they were calling the Holy Spirit, an evil spirit.
That was blasphemy.
It fits the dictionary definition.
And if that weren't enough, Mark 3:30 should erase all doubt:
Jesus issued that warning "BECAUSE they said He had an evil spirit!"
Why in the world do Christians try to make this mean something other than the plain words of Scripture? Why do they not want "blasphemy" to mean what the dictionary says it means?
Why do they prefer not to interpret this warning within the clear context?
Is it because they don't want their tongues restricted, when it comes to speaking evil of Christians?
Do they feel driven to speak evil of churches outside of their denomination?
Can they simply not handle the idea that EVIL SPEAKING could be unforgivable?
Surely God would forgive ANY sin!
Except... Jesus said not this one.
Why not?
Why would a sin against the Father be more easily forgiven, than a sin against the Holy Spirit?
Probably because of the nature of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is extremely sensitive.
It's unity and being "in one accord" that sets the atmosphere for His intense presence. (Acts 2)
But it's disunity and disharmony that drives Him from us.
He is easily grieved, when we speak against others. (Eph 4:29-30)
The Spirit of God doesn't stay where the atmosphere isn't comfortable for Him.
He's like a dove. A dove doesn't stay where there isn't peace. But she returns where she finds rest.
Our words are more powerful than we think. We tend to think we speak a word into the air, and it's gone. It was nothing but breath, and once the sounds fade, we think the words are gone forever.
But the Bible says very differently.
It was by the Word, the very Breath of God, that the entire universe was created.
What is the breath of God? the "Pneuma"... The Spirit.
When God shaped His mouth to speak, the Spirit was directed into the emptiness, the void of earth.
And LIFE sprang forth!
God made us in His image... and He put His breath into us.
And by our words, we create the atmosphere around us.
By our words, we shape our children.
By our words, we either nurture or destroy our homes.
By our words, we welcome God into our lives!
"If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus...!"
God loves to hear us speak.
He says, "Take with you WORDS, and turn to the Lord!" (Hos. 14:2)
But our words can also drive His presence from us.
We are drawn to God by the Holy Spirit.
If we offend the Holy Spirit by calling Him evil... if we call His works demonic, then He will no longer draw us to God.
There are evil people who feel no conviction of sin whatsoever. No drawing to God.
No desire to be in His presence.
And there are those who strive very hard to be Christians, working at being godly... who actually do not feel the Spirit of God drawing them. They are motivated by fear of damnation, not love toward God. Remember, the devils believe, and tremble. The spirit by which these church members operate, is the same religious spirit that drove the Pharisees to blaspheme.
If you feel God drawing you - if you feel conviction of sin,
THANK GOD!
THAT's proof you have not blasphemed the Holy Spirit.
